Donna Summer Can Color!

I never cease to be amazed at how I have preconceived notions about things. When I got the latest Donna Summer CD “Crayons”, I had thoughts of 70’s disco and my roller boogie days as a pre-teen. Now, as a rock-n-roll chick, I was a bit skeptical to sit down and have a listen. But if my life has taught me any lessons lately, it’s not to judge.



When a music-loving friend of mine and I slid the CD in for our first listen, we immediately had problems keeping our feet from tapping. It’s a good thing, too, because the song was called “Stamp Your Feet” and that is exactly what you want to do when you hear it.

The second thing that I noticed immediately was that she sounds truly amazing. I recently read a quote by Annie Lennox of the Eurythmics where she said that when she got into her 50’s, her voice really came into its own and became really rich. That quote came to my mind as I listened to Donnas’ voice. Rich, indeed! She has a very strong, smooth and beautiful voice.

Oh, did I mention that Donna looks even hotter than she did 30 years ago? (Because she totally does!)

Listening to the music, we weaved our way through tracks like “Crayons” (with Ziggy Marley) and the mellow “Sand on my Feet”, we were diggin’ Donna Summer as much as we did in our youth. And I didn’t feel the slightest bit un-cool listening to it.

When I came to the track “Be Myself Again”, it was hard not to feel like Donna Summer had been reading my diary lately. Any woman who came out a bit later in life might make this song her personal anthem.

This is the kind of CD that anyone would want to own. It is entirely appropriate for a party but also the kind of music you’d just play in the car. You can dance to it as easily as you could just sit back and appreciate it for its writing, vocals and production. On all levels, this record is a winner.
