All partisanship and ideological differences aside, I really wish you ladies would cool the misogynistic attacks on Sarah Palin--not just this one--but the widget devoted to trashing her and some of the commentary

What has she done to you? She belongs to a pentecostal church I personally find rather disgusting--but technically her queer friendly record in 100%--vetoed a discriminatory bill, has not tried to codify any of the fundie agenda, nor with all the efforts has she been found to have ever uttered anything that could be construed homophobic.

And I am really tired of the idea that she is some kind of turncoat female Uncle Tom. It is not necessary that women conform to some ideological check list. Rather than trashing McCain for picking her as a cynical token to get women--he should be applauded for taking the risk of naming a successful woman.

It is really sad when everything that a Republican does is automatically assumed to be evil--at some point the old geezer will decide what is the point? How are we ever going to get past all this polarization if any effort at inclusiveness is attacked?

Go ahead and criticize her beliefs or hypocrisy--but it is really unseemly for women to join in the sexist trashing.

I personally think we should stop talking about Sarah Palin because it distracts from the positives of the Obama campaign, and those positives are exactly what kept Obama up in the polls right up to the RNC.

Anyhoo, one quick point in re: Becky's comment:

Sexism is saying Sarah Palin can't do her job because she is a woman.

I'm saying she can't do her job because she is Sarah Palin. A lying, ignorant, scandal-ridden, fascist (as in, supporting rule-by-corporations), Bible-thumping politician sucks, male or female.

Paula, I KNOW you must be laughing as hard as I am right now...

Becky, I posted it as a bit of humor to lighten up our mood here at Lesbiatopia. I feel the same as you (and am also a Libertarian) but, hell, Gina Gershon is HAWT.

No offense intended...

Eight years ago, and throughout the bulk of President Bush's Presidency people have said roughtly the same thing about him that they are saying about Governor Palin. They have made similar jokes, and attacked him for being unable to even name the President of Pakistan in 2000. No one claimed that making fun of him was mysanthropic or sexist, so anyone making fun of Sarah Palin for being a cronyistic and hypocritical politician are not being sexist.

Like it or not, there ARE dozens of far more qualified women in the Republican Party who would have made as much of a splash as Sarah Palin in terms of women's rights and would have been far, far less vulnerable to parody and satire than Palin. Unfortunately for Senator McCain, many of them flat out refused to join his ticket. Hutchenson, for instance, made it quite clear that she wanted to have a greater role in her chldren's life and chose to return to Texas.

Honestly, you can complain about people making fun of her, but to hide behind the lable of sexism is to do exactly what you are doing now, not coming up with an actual argument that this is wrong. Laced in the parody and satire IS the argument against her policies. After all, that is, and has always been, the role of parody and satire ever since the days Ancient Greek playwrites and Celtic Bards.

lezident--sasy she wants to stick to the positiives of the Obama campaign, and I agree but then she makes the final comment:

"I'm saying she can't do her job because she is Sarah Palin. A lying, ignorant, scandal-ridden, fascist (as in, supporting rule-by-corporations), Bible-thumping politician sucks, male or female."

The ignorant one is you--in using the word "fascism" you are as ignorant as the talking penis heads on Fox News who are always ignorantly talking about "Islamo-fascism."

I love when you ladies get feisty... the passion, the arguments... god, it's so sexy.

WARNING COGITION AND BIG WORDS AHEAD!

In an academic sense, Lezident is accurate. Palin is a fascist. The fact that fascist has become a dirty word that we aren't suppose to use simply shows that people don't want us to use it to accurately describe a political philosophy.

The reality is that, you, Becky C., have not answered the critique of your original post. Making fun of Sarah Palin is not sexist. If we stated that she should not be President because she is a woman, then that would be different. If, however, we say that she is an ignorant, cronyistic moron who has the lied extensively about her policies and her political positions over the last year, that is a strongly worded critique of her capacity to govern. The fact that she has no concept of what a preemptive strike is or an entitlement program is should scare you.

And yet, I cannot imagine that any argument made to you will disuade you from what you believe. To you, this is sexist because, heaven forbid, we should actually make fun of our politicians. I've even made fun of Hilary Clinton, a woman I admire. And yet, the Republican machine has put out stuff that was truly racist against Senator Obama and sexist against Hilary Clinton.

So far, no one has stated that Sarah Palin should not be President because she might decide to nuke Russia while in the middle of PMS. Yet, they pulled that one against Geraldine Ferraro twenty-four years ago.

This isn't about sexism, this is about parody and satire. There is a huge difference.

Um, Becky C., fascism has several well defined and recognizable characteristics. Among these are:

1. terror-based dictatorship that is reactionary, imperialistic, and chauvinistic with military supremacy

2. middle-class reinforcement of status quo to forestall lower-working-class revolution for fear of retribution from the oppressed
a. corporate power is protected; labor is suppressed

3. unstable capitalist markets in which business and government become a single economic unit (hello, Halliburton!)

4. chauvinist demagogy fostering selective persecution against the “unpatriotic” (like queers, commies, Muslims, or Mexicans) using junk science and revisionism
a. identification of “scapegoats” as a common perceived threat (Commies, queers, immigrants, Muslims)

5. a mass media that is totally controlled by corporations (Fox, CNN, MSNBC, newspapers)

6. disdain for intellectuals (the reality- and science-based communities vs. the faith-based community) and the arts (“No Child Left Behind” cut arts programs first)

7. rampant cronyism and corruption (heckuva job, Brownie) fostered by fraudulent elections (2000, 2004)

If that doesn't describe America for you, then you're clueless at best and willfully ignorant at worst. We can revisit this topic after you learn something about it, Becky C. No worries.

Lezident-

In 2003, Dr. Lawrence Britt released a quick study of the fourteen characteristics of fascism. He did a study of the five most powerful fascist dictators in History. I thought I would pass this along.

#5 Rampant Sexism
The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Opposition to abortion is high, as is homophobia and anti-gay legislation and national policy.

Becky... What we are doing here is letting people know we dislike Palin as much as you seem to love her.

Now I personally can't see what you like about her, beside the fact she is a bit of a hottie, likes guns and has a nice white American sounding last name.

Becky,

Sarah Palin thinks the planet Earth was created in six days 6,000 years ago and she wants schools to teach the rest of our kids to deny geology, anthropology, archeology and common sense as well.

She’s forcing her own daughter into a loveless marriage to a teenage punk, and if she had her way she would have the rest of us to guide our daughters in that direction.

And not only does she thinks that a woman shouldn’t have the right to choose, but she thinks it should be the law of the land that she has to carry and deliver her rapist’s baby.

Are we being misogynistic? Perhaps.

But then again we may be seeing what Sarah Palin really is.
