Good idea. It's almost impossible for me to grasp that "don't ask don't tell" is still out there, kicking. Mortifying.
This is ridiculous--Bob Gates can not do away with don't ask don't tell on his own. At one time the military could have decided on its own by regulation to change the policy, and there is a big indication that the military brass are are indifferent to the policy, try to ignore it, and would not care if it was changed.
However, due to the usual political games of Bill Clinton, in 1993 Congress passed a law banning homosexuals in the military, and as a compromise put in "don''t ask don't tell"
Barack Obama promised during the campaign to push congress to repeal the law. But it has been put on the backburner. The word is that Obama does not end to ask
Congress to make the change for several months, perhaps not until 2010.
At any rate neither Bob Gates, Barack Obama, the Joint Chiefs of Staff or any other military or executive branch group or individual can get rid of the policy.
Only Congress can do it

And don't condemn Obama because you heard a rumor about what he wants to do with DADT; he's not even in office yet for Chrissake.
