Double review: Film and Bar, Coyote Ugly

Alot of "firsts" this week. This is my first bar review. I figured while I was at it, to throw in a review of the movie that was based on the bar.

MOVIE REVIEW

"COYOTE UGLY"

by Cynthia Rodriguez

If you haven't seen this movie yet, you should really have your Lesbionic license revoked. I mean, seriously, beautiful women, singing and dancing on a bar, what more can you ask for? When this film first came out, quite a few critics were pretty harsh on it. C'mon now, lighten up. It wasn't meant to be Oscar material, it's an eye candy movie, and it needs to be rated as such. I've seen much worse when it comes to eye candy movies, and this is one of the better ones. It's a feel good, light and fluffy, romantic/musical like comedy meant to be watched 137 times, until you know all the words and dances by heart. Yes, needless to say, it's one of my favorites, and it's absolutely mandatory for all Lesbians.

It is the story of Violet Sanford, a young, beautiful, aspiring, struggling songwriter from New Jersey, adorably played by the doe-eyed Piper Perabo, (first time I fell in love with the actress), trying to make it in the "big, bad city" of New York. Throw in a few life obstacles, Kevin (played by Adam Garcia), a cute boyfriend from Australia, who is also a struggling, well, we don't really get to know too much about him, but who cares? It's all about the girls. You also have a lovable, teddy bear of a Dad played by John Goodman, and a gorgeous supporting cast of "Coyotes", which includes Tyra Banks, and Violet's "day" job working at the hottest night spot in NYC, Coyote Ugly. All those ingredients add up to a very fun film you won't mind watching again, and again.

The movie is based on the real-life bar in NYC by the same name. A former Coyote named Elizabeth Gilbert apparently wrote an article called, "The Muse of the Coyote Ugly Saloon" in some magazine, and someone decided to make a film out of it. Works for me. I have not seen the DVD yet. It supposed to have some tasty special features, so I definitely plan on checking that out.

It definitely gives you an appreciation on bartending. I used to bartend. It was one of the most fun jobs I've ever had in my life. Good times. Of course, they take it to a whole new level with their "flairtending", the art of manipulation of bar tools, bottles, glasses, etc. In other words, doing alot of cool tricks with the shot glasses and such. I would also like to mention that Rachel, "the New York bitch", played by Bridget Moynahan is my favorite Coyote. Everyone has a favorite Coyote.

So is it cliche-ish? Yes. But, so what. Some of the most fun movies to watch never go anywhere near any kinds of awards. You don't hear anyone saying they can watch "No Country for Old Men" a hundred times.

BAR REVIEW

(THE ORIGINAL)COYOTE UGLY, NYC

by Cynthia Rodriguez

It took me almost a decade to get there but I finally did it. I went to Coyote Ugly in New York City. Now THAT was a fun evening. I did some research first. It has become quite the franchise. I wanted to experience the original one. The one the movie was based on. I read the reviews on it. I thought to myself, "keep your expectations low, and your acceptance high", that way I wouldn't be dissapointed. I pretty much do that with everything. It worked.

I can't tell you about the other locations, just this one. It can't be rated as a night club, or "regular" bar. It's a dive. A good dive. If you like dives, then you'll love it.

Being a first timer, I realize I probably had "SUCKER" written all over my forehead. They WILL take advantage of that, which is of course, part of the charm. I walked in there with my "RORCROTCH TEST" t-shirt which was my solo art show involving painted crotch blots. Without explanation of this, the first Coyote that caught my eye seemed to know what it meant and promptly proceeded to lift her leg up and slam her cowgirl boot on the bar and said, "So, what do you see?", as she pointed to her happy place. Completely catching me off guard, I didn't utter a word. What I was actually thinking was, "my head, right there." Of course, I didn't SAY that, but I was THINKING it. I didn't want to be rude. Besides, the bouncer guy looked kind of scary.

Yes, to me it was just like the movie, except alot smaller, and only two Coyotes were on duty. The one did the twirly stuff with the shot glasses, which are HUGE. They are more like, double, triple shots, which I didn't realize until I had hit the "porcelain alter" later that evening. The other danced on the bar. This was very entertaining. They were both fun, and nice to talk to. It's definitely a SALOON. Meaning country/western type atmosphere. But again, being what it is, I can deal with that.

I immediately became drinking buddies to a native saloon goer who was apparently a regular, and was smart enough to stick to the $2. cans of beer. He filled me in on all behind the scenes, as he called it, "seedy scene".

It IS one of the cheapest places in town to drink as long as you stick to the cheap stuff. Once you hit their liquor shelf and start buying and chugging down shots with the ladies, do body shots, and any other delightfully shameful activity, then you're pretty much screwed. I spent an obscene amount of moolah there that night. Not that I regret it, I'm just stating a fact. And surely, I got the t-shirt. No good tourist leaves without the shirt.

I was probably the only Lesbian there that night, and maybe one out of two or three women, other than the employees. They did inform me that, not surprisingly, they are quite popular among Lesbians. Duh.

Your best bet to get home or wherever you're going after Coyote Ugly is to take a cab. I would not recommend stumbling around the subway. That is, of course, only if you do Coyote Ugly right, and by those standards, I definitely did.

A Labeling System?

by Cynthia Rodriguez

This is a bitch and moan type of rant. I haven't done this in a while, so I'm overdue. This is about the dating scene, the club scene, the bar scene, which for the good, bad, and the ugly, through sickness and through health, I have been a part of for a very long time. Don't underestimate. Being a part-time gay barfly is alot of work. It's not all about Karaoke.
You're probably thinking, what do you mean, "A Label System?" ? Yeah, I know, we don't like labels, "don't label me, I don't like labels", blah, blah, blah. Fine. Bear with me, this is what I'm talking about. At a straight bar/club, you have (for the most part), straight men and straight women, women looking for men, men looking for women. The end.

At a gay club/bar I've learned it is not that simple. Over the years you realize it's alot more complicated. Exhibit A: You're at the club scoping out some chick for two hours that you've already bought at least three drinks for. At the end of the night she drunkily confesses to you that she is straight and happily married, (however, her husband is nowhere in sight). I like to refer to this little hustling scheme as the "straight girl scam". Straight women, (especially if they are broke-ass women), that go to gay clubs now and then to score free drinks from us dumb, desperate Lesbians. Meanwhile, that nice girl in the corner you find out a WHILE later, whom you ignored all night because you were busy chasing that straight moocher all night, has a crush on you, but you blew it because you were stupid.
If it were just Lesbians that went to a Lesbian bar, it would be okay. This wouldn't be an issue. The thing is, and don't get me wrong, I LOVE diversity, but damn, it can get very confusing, very fast. Because of it's nature gay bars attract ALL types. Anything and everything goes. To know who's what most of the time is nearly impossible. How are you supposed to pick somebody up like that?
I propose a sticker label system for gay bars. You know, like those little stickers that say "Hello, my name is...", well, something similiar to that but using certain colors. Say like BLUE would mean Lesbian, RED would mean straight as in "DANGER!, RED FLAG! RED FLAG! STRAIGHT GIRL!" RED AND BLUE would mean bisexual.

Then if you really wanted to break it down, you can do RED AND BLACK, meaning straight AND married. RED AND GREY meaning straight and married, but curious and want to experiment with somebody dumb enough to get into all that, or I'm just really getting sick of my husband and I'm ready to leave him anyway, etc, etc, etc.

It can go on and on. You can get quite creative with it. I think it would be fun, eliminate all the bullshit, and put the con-artists out of business.

It's just a suggestion.

My Favorite Lesbian NightClubs in LA

Okay ladies, here I find myself on the Friday night before the Los Angeles Gay Pride Festival, and I am wondering what all the lesbians are doing tonight! Most of my friends are out partying it up this weekend, but I am home tonight getting ready for a night out tomorrow. I love to get dressed up and go out dancing after dinner and some drinks. My wife knows all the good spots and usually chooses where we go, and over the years I have developed my favorites.

Since I live in Southern California, there are a few gay clubs and lesbian bars in my area, and the closest spot to me that I like is The Executive Suite in Long Beach (website). This is a longtime favorite spot for a Saturday night, and for the LGBT community to get together and party before and after the Long Beach Gay Pride Festival.

I also like Club Ripples which has two different dance floors and a karaoke area for those that are interested in showing their vocal talents(website). I prefer Friday nights at Club Ripples which is referred to as Debra's @ The Beach. Check out Debra's MySpace page here for pics.

If we just want to have a drink and play some pool, then we head on over to Club Broadway (link). We used to like to go to Hamburger Mary's in Long Beach because it was right next to Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles which is always good at 2am when you've had a bit to drink. There is a Hamburger Mary's in West Hollywood (link) that you could check out, which offers more entertainment and food choices.

Also out in Los Angeles and Hollywood area is The Palms Bar which has a nice size dance floor and friendly bartenders (website). The Palms is also located right near a secure parking garage which is good. We have fun at Girl Bar and have also been over to Circus Disco, but they do play a lot of club music and I am more of a hip hop fan.

My favorite spot is on Tuesdays and whenever my wife and I can get away on a Tuesday this is a guilty pleasure of ours. Michelle's XXX, also known as Peanuts, is a sexy spot for lesbians to dance, drink, and watch Michelle's girls put on a great show. If you've never been to Michelle's XXX, you really don't know what you're missing. All I can say is that the ladies at Michelle's XXX leave visions in your mind you will cherish forever. *wink* Michelle's XXX also hosts the LA Gay Pride After Party so be sure to check out their website if you are heading out to that this weekend. You can also find Michelle's XXX on MySpace here. Michelle's XXX does offer Club Sexy on Saturdays every so often, so be sure to add yourself to their mailing list if that is something are interested in.

If you are out here in Los Angeles and you do see me out and about with my wife at the club, be sure to stop me and say hi and buy me a drink!!! hahaha I'm excited to go out this weekend and get my party on, and I hope that the rest of the ladies here in So Cal who are partying for pride are having a blast and staying safe. Always designate a driver ladies, and be sure to buckle up! Thanks for reading and Much Love! ~Julie Phineas~
