Star-Studded Documentary "Out in the Open" Coming to DVD January 29th

Following the historic reelection of President Barack Obama and marriage equality advancing in four more states, QC Cinema is proud to announce that the January 29th DVD release of Matthew Smith's Out in the Open ($24.99), a documentary comprised of a collection of interviews with successful figures who openly identify with their sexual orientation.  CEO Richard Wolff and Real Stream Productions' Ben Milliken closed a deal for the release at the American Film Market.

This documentary targets at-risk youth across the world, as well as their families, friends, and teachers. Out in the Open presents that no single person is the same and that all people should be celebrated. Out in the Open interviews celebrities, politicians, and everyday allies, straight and gay, who openly celebrate the LGBTQ community. These figures will discuss how they coped with stereotypes attached to their sexual orientation by sharing personal experiences of coming to terms with their sexuality.

Featured in Out in the Open are gay and allied celebrities such as "Queer Eyes" star Carson Kressley, Oscar nominee Eric Roberts and his wife Eliza, Olympic gold medal diver and activist Greg Louganis, Broadway star Josh Strickland, and musician Keaton Simons among others.  These figures will discuss how they coped with stereotypes attached to their sexual orientation by sharing personal experiences of coming to terms with their sexuality. Out in the Open is aimed to guide the LGBTQ youth who struggle with bullying, ostracism and suicide in their communities.

Real Stream teamed up with Outset, an Outfest/Lifeworks program that offers at-risk LGBT youth an intensive course in filmmaking. Providing them with mentors who take the youth through a crash course, teaching them all there is to know about the art of film. By the end of the program, the students have shot their own short films from concept to screen, and premiered them at Outfest.  Real Stream was there to document this process, and capture their stories for inclusion in Out in the Open

Breaking Glass Co-President Richard Ross said, ""It is a pleasure to start 2013 with Matthew Smith's amazing documentary Out in the Open. As the country moves further and further away from any sort of closet, the film celebrates acceptance and empowerment for everyone."

The DVD will arrive complete a director's commentary, deleted scenes, bloopers, behind the scenes footage and much more.

Help Lesbian Film by Donating Today: Portrait of a Serial Monogamist

A few weeks ago we introduced you to a new lesbian film-in-the-making: Portrait of a Serial Monogamist is about a forty-something television producer and serial monogamist who breaks up with her long-standing girlfriend, only to discover that she may have broken up with the one she was meant to be with. This film is influenced by such greats like Annie HallManhattan and High Fidelity.

Set in Toronto, Portrait of a Serial Monogamist tells the story of Elsie Neufeld, a 40 something television producer who is charming, successful and a complete mess when it comes to relationships. When Elsie breaks up with her long-standing girlfriend, she is forced to confront herself, the prospect of being single for the first time and the possibility that she broke up with the one she is meant to be with.

They only have 8 days left in their Indiegogo campaign to raise the funds to shoot the movie. So far, they've raised just over $16,000, which is fantastic, but still leaves them quite a bit short of our goal.  Please donate if you can, every little bit helps!

Interested in learning more about the movie?   We have a couple of videos here shared exclusively for you by the Director of the movie. The first video is Diane Flacks who plays Elsie, the lead

The second video is Second City alumnus Carolyn (Coco) Taylor who plays Robyn, the one who gets dumped:

Movie review: "Bridesmaids"

BRIDESMAIDS

directed by Paul Feig
produced by Judd Apatow
written by Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo

MOVIE REVIEW BY CYNTHIA RODRIGUEZ

I first fell for Kristen Wiig when she played the kick ass roller derby team captain of the Austin, Texas Hurl Scouts, who also had a soft side being the only Mom on the team,
#99 MAGGIE MAYHEM. The one who said, "Be your own hero." I've never been a big SNL fan, so before that, I didn't really notice her, but I remember watching "WHIP IT" and thinking, "Who's that hot grrl that looks like Jennifer Aniston?"

So, I'm usually not a "going to the movies to see a comedy" kind of person. I'm always afraid they are gonna suck, and that I spent twenty bucks on a bag of popcorn alone for nothing. Especially when I consider it to be a "chick-flick". It's usually ONLY when my "date" insists on seeing one, or when I do the group grrly thing and we do dinner and a movie that most likely has something to do with "Sex And The City". I prefer my action/big epic drama/horror film/super hero movie you should see on IMAX kind of films. Everything else can wait until Netflix.

This time I made an exception. I was feeling very chill and laid back this week, and the middle of the week movie night was a spontaneous, rare occurance for me. I'm glad I did that, because it was actually funny as hell.

I think this may possibly be my first "Judd Apatow" experience, even though he did not necessarily write this one, just produced it. And it was without the usual "SLACK PACK" of guys he has in his movies. My first Apatow experience happened to be with all girls, which was quite delightful. The fact that it was from the makers of "SuperBad", etc, really didn't impress me, since I haven't seen any of those films, but I thought I'd give it a shot.

The aforementioned Kristen Wiig stars as "Annie", a woman who is down and out on love, work, her living situation, and...well, pretty much everything and then all of a sudden gets sucked into the vortex that is known as being the maid of honor in her best friend's wedding. The timing couldn't be worse. She's broke, bitter, and not exactly in the most stable state of mind to be planning her BFF's most important time of her life, but she deals, as best as she can, with not too successful results. Sucks for her, but very funny for the rest of us.

The movie dives into the bizarro world that is what I call "wedding culture". There are magazines, books, TV shows, and a multitude of other media dedicated to it. All those quirky, little rituals we have for each other when one is about to strap on the ball and chain, the showers, bachelorette parties, all the elaborate planning for this and that, the venue, the dress, the decorations, the food, the guest list, the entertainment, blah, blah, blah. I believe all that can sometimes get a little out of control. It's fucking insanity. Socially acceptable insanity.

A few notes, on a few things: Some bits of it kinda reminded me of an Adam Sandler movie. Just a few moments when the humor just seems a little too much for me. Like for example, what I call the "gross factor" as in, I didn't really need to see a woman puking on another woman's head. I think there is a tendency for a lot of today's comedies to have that kind of over the top bathroom humor, like literally in the bathroom humor. It's probably just my age showing, but moving right along...

Chris O'Dowd who plays Annie's love interest Officer Nathan is adorable. Although I don't know if it's just me, but his Irish accent was a bit questionable. I felt like I sometimes heard it, and then sometimes I didn't. Not necessarily great looking but so fucking sweet, cute, and charming, you just want to eat him up, with a cream puff on top, as opposed to Annie's "Ted", the dickhead, so-called "friend with benefits" played too well by "Mad Men" Jon Hamm who is really good at playing a douchebag.

The scene-stealer Melissa McCarthy's "Meagan" should have TOTALLY been a dyke. It was like c'mon people! Can't you see it?! The moment she walked onto the screen me and my friend looked at each other and were like "LESBIAN!" It didn't even feel right hearing her talk the way she did about men, and the last scene during the credits with that guy was just WRONG. When she was talking about doing a "Fight Club" bachelorette party theme, I thought to myself, "Thatta grrl!--- yep, LESBIAN!"

It's also good commentary on true friendship, that long-time, goes way back to child-hood, we know everything about each other, and been through everything together, can't do anything without you kind of friendship, and what that means, and how important it is, especially to women.

This is the kind of "girly" movie that is good for EVERYONE. One that both women, and men can appreciate. If not for the theme, definitely for the humor. Whoever says that women can't be funny can kiss Meagan's ass.

Lesbiatopia: A New Look for The NEW Lesbian

(from the Editor & Founder of Lesbiatopia.com)

Lesbiatopia was a project I started in 2007 only a few short years after I came out of the closet.  I was feeling so gay I felt the need to express myself to an audience that would not only relate to what I was going through, but would participate.  Well, I can say without hesitation that this blog has become so much more than I ever imagined.  It has been a sounding board, a creative outlet, a fun form of written expression, a gathering of friends and strangers, a partner in activism and more.  I have seen many eager writers donate their time and energy into heartfelt articles, articles about bad hair and even articles about sex.  It has seen thousands of page views and has been visited by all demographics from all around the world.  It was even nominated as the "Best LGBT Blog of 2008" in the 2008 bloggie awards, being beat out only by the Queen of Media himself, Perez Hilton.  Not a bad feat if I do say so myself.

I feel like a proud mother when I look back at countless hours I have put in making the site something that I could truly and genuinely feel good about.  When I think back to all that I accomplished, I can only smile and wonder what the future for the site holds.  I know I have neglected my lesbian love child for some time now, getting caught up in other projects, work, life, love, heartbreak, cross country travel, a big move from Boston to LA and back to Boston again, change of jobs, change of girlfriends, change.  It's funny how life can take off on you like a teenager in a souped up Honda.  Vroom vroom, you bat an eye, and it's 5 years later. I had been wanting to resurrect the site for so long but like so many things, I kept procrastinating the re-design (or my ADD got in the way).  I finally put my foot down and I am so glad I did.  After diligently working with a brand new look and feel for the site, I decided to go with a cleaner, simpler, more accessible design. And I want to go big. Again.  Mom always said, "Go big or go home".  And for the record, it wasn't my mom that said that, but I'm sure it was someone's.

Despite the new look, I thought it'd be fun and somewhat reminiscent to highlight some of the site's best articles and shining moments since its inception in 2007.  One of my all time favorite moments was meeting, interviewing and becoming friends with the beautiful and talented comedic actress Nicol Paone.  I did a 5 part video interview series with her and she was kind enough to invite me into her home.  You can see Exclusive! An Interview with BGSS's Nicol Paone, Part 1 of 5 here.  In meeting Nicol, I also become good friends with her hilarious and extremely talented girlfriend, Erin Foley.  I am so thankful for the opportunities that the site provided me with in meeting some of Hollywood's most hilarious gay women.  And I got to go to free comedy shows whenever I wanted.  It was, in short, awesome.

From my work with Lesbiatopia, I was offered a writing position at AOL's biggest gay blog (at the time) QueerSighted.com. I also wrote for OurChart.com during the final season of The L Word, an honor than any lesbian would be uber proud of.

I was sent to the True Colors tour concert as a photography and journalist, I was invited to the premier of Itty Bitty Titty Committee, and I even produced a collaborative webisode, OutLoud, with the lovely and very talented out lesbian actress, Michelle Wolff. Lesbiatopia Exclusive: OutLoud, An Inside Look at Out Entertainment

In addition to all the celesbian fun, there are countless articles in the Lesbiatopia archives that I just adore.  880 to be exact.  Can you believe it? 880 articles were written on this blog by countless numbers of contributors. Friends. Strangers.  Ex Girlfriends.  It's sort of crazy when I think about it, I almost can't believe it's true.  It is virtually impossible to go through EVERY single article that was ever written and pick out my favorite, BUT I did manage to round up a few of the best, funniest and most controversial and have compiled them here for you to savior and enjoy; a little throwback to the good old days.

When it all boils down to it, I decided to breathe life back into Lesbiatopia.com, not because of the free stuff, or the media passes, or even the fame (ha!) but it is simply because I love to write. I'm sure you're wondering what the future of Lesbiatopia holds, and that remains to be seen. But there will be new content, more content, and more frequent content.  It will be fun, and smart, and fresh, and entertaining.  And if you are interested in being a contributing, send me an email and I will get you set up with your own profile for the site and you too can see how amazing it is to have a voice to an audience that listens and cares.  I hope you enjoy the new look and I welcome any and all feedback, thoughts, comments, one-liners, etc.  And let the record show that although this site is titled "Lesbiatopia", any and all members of the LGBTQI community are always welcomed, this is truly a judgement free zone.

Top Chef Las Vegas: The Lesbians Du Jour

For those of you who are foodies like myself, you're probably big fans of Top Chef and have been watching it for years. I mean, one look at Padma Lakshmi, the Top Chef host, and you'll be wiping the corners of your mouth like a diabetic at a candy store.

One of the other great things about Top Chef is their open inclusion of members of hte LGBT community. There has been some sort of gay or lesbian contestant almost every season since the show aired 6 seasons ago. We like that. We like it a lot. This season, Season 6, is no exception to the rule.

Season six of the number 1 food show on cable returned on Wednesday, August 19th at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Top Chef: Las Vegas will pit 17 hopeful chefs from across the country battling it out in the kitchen for $100,000 to invest in their culinary career. Delectable host Padma Lakshmi is back once again alongside the no-holds-barred head judge Tom Colicchio. Food & Wine magazine's Gail Simmons and food critic Toby Young will once again round out the panel of judges this year.

This year, two lesbians will be gracing the screen.

Out lesbian contestant Preeti Mistry, 33, hails from San Francisco, where she works as the Executive Chef for Bon Appétit Management Company at Google headquarters. Google has a reputation for serving insanely amazing food to their employees, so hopes are high Mistry will concoct some culinary masterpieces. Mistry was also educated at the prestigious Le Cordon Bleu in London. Now don't get too excited and start swooning over this one, – she’s been with her partner for thirteen years.

Ashley Merriman, 32, may not lay claim to the same kind of international culinary background as Mistry, but she's worked on both coasts at classy restaurants and learned her craft at the Institute of Culinary Education in New York. Ironically enough, Merriman originates from Center Sandwich, New Hampshire – no really, that’s an actual place. Merriman loves to cook “robust” food and thinks a meal isn’t complete unless you’ve been “beat in the face by a stick of butter.” Plus, she is friggin adorable. How could not love that charmingly warm smile of hers?

Stay tuned for more updates on the fates of the "Lesbian's Du Jour" of Top Chef: Las Vegas.

Luscious Lesbian Drama is Back! Gimme Sugar Miami

If you remember correctly, I had my 2.5 seconds of fame on the premier episode of Gimme Sugar filmed at the notoriously famous Truckstop night at HERE lounge, put on by the fabulous Linda and Michelle of FUSE EVENTS. I've met Linda Fusco, personally, and I don't think she sleeps - this woman is THE premier lesbian party-promoter of LA and boy does she know hot to throw a party.

Luckily for us lesbians who love our drama (and we know there's plenty of it to go around), LOGO is premiering its hot original series this summer, featuring television’s only on-air show with lesbians and bisexual women. The ladies of Gimme Sugar hit Miami this to explore the lesbian club scene in the heat of Florida. Hot, sweaty, lesbians who will be dancing, fighting and f*cking? Count me in!

The return of “Gimme Sugar" with "Gimme Sugar: Miami," premieres Monday, June 22, 2009 at 10:00 PM ET/PT and full episodes will also be available to watch online. Go home and set your TIVO now... stat!

You can check out clips from the show here. The girls will also be chatting live with fans after each show premiere on the show's facebook page.

Lesbian TV: What's Hot Right Now

They don't call it "boob tube" for nothing, my friends. If you're like me, you love your TV and need your nightly fix. So, what are the lesbians watching these days? Well, I can't speak for all TV shows, but I can tell you what's on my DVR right now.

Nip/Tuck - This controversial show has been at the top of my list since it started six years ago. Nip/Tuck has not been shy in the lesbian department, with long-running character and Latina anesthesiologist Dr. Liz Cruz (Roma Mafia) as the "tokin' lesbian"... until last season when Portia De Rossi joined the cast as Olivia Lord, the sexy acupuncturist and more importantly, Julia's (Joely Richardson) love interest.

The good news is she's back this season although right now there's no indication of how many episodes Portia will be in for Season 6 (which aired January 6, 2009). I know my eyes will be glued to the tube at 10pm PST Tuesday nights in hopes of some more steamy lesbian sex scenes that Nip/Tuck is known for. Can I get a tissue?

House - Although it's been on hiatus since before the holidays, yet another favorite medical drama is HOUSE and I thank the good lord each episode for the gift that is Olivia Wilde, aka "Thirteen", aka Dr. Remy Hadley. Thirteen plays the smart, sexy and somewhat mysterious bisexual doctor on House's famous team. In a recent episode titled "Lucky 13", Dr. Hadley gets it on with a patient. A female patient. It was hot and awesome and made me want to dance around my living room. They recently foreshadowede that Thirteen may have a fling with Foreman, the African-American male doctor that is also on House's team. All I have to say to FOX's writers is, c'mon!! Does network television make all bisexual female characters go back to men in the end? The verdict's still out on that one, but you know I'll keep watching.

American Idol - You know you watch it, don't deny. It's Season 8 which equates to 8 glorious years of American Idol fanatacism. Who will come out on top this year? It's hard to say. Season 8 premiered last night and continues tonight at 8pm PST. Will the gays come out for auditions loud and proud? Will the lesbians make their fabulous voices heard? Will FOX once again cut away from anyone that seems remotely homosexual and continue to focus on blonde bimbos, rednecks and teen heart throbs? Only time will tell.

Top Chef - Mmmm do I love me some food and a good cooking show. This season, Season 5, there's only one out lesbian but she's pretty kickass and can make a mean soup like no other. Jamie, age 30 all tattooed and pretty, is also pretty rad. She's confident, outgoing, talented and
works as the Executive Chef at Absinthe, one of the busiest restaurants in San Francisco, to boot. You know I'll be rooting for this homegirl every Wednesday night at 10pm PST on BRAVO.

The L Word - This lesbocentric soap is a no brainer. Dykes, dykes and more dykes. So far we've experienced five glorious seasons of hot sex, lesbian drama, hot sex, uhauls galore, hot sex, nudity, hot sex and enough controversy to make George Bush look like a saint. The sad news is that the final season is only 8 episodes long. What gives, Showtime?! The final season (tear) premiers on January 18, 2009. I think there is still one question that remains in all our minds... what will happen to lesbian life after the L Word?

30 Rock - Ok, I know there's no lesbians on this show, but there's Tina Fey and although she's not actually a lesbian, a girl can dream right? The next episode, set to air tomorrow night at 9:30pm PST will be rockin' the sexy latino Salma Hayek as a nurse who soon gets hit on by big CEO man Jack McCallister (Alec Baldwin). But we all know the lesbos only watch the show for one reason. Tina Fey. Bow down to the media Goddess!

What's on your weekly TV line-up?

Lesbians Love Them Some P!nk

Singer Pink is top of the pops when it comes to lesbian love, with nearly half (46%) of British lesbians naming her ‘most lesbilicious straight celebrity’, according to a major gay poll released today. And while Pink claims to be straight, her lesbian fanbase think otherwise – a third (31%) think the recently-divorced singer will come out of the closet in 2009.

But although Pink may be popular with lesbians, the undisputed lesbilicious queen remains Ellen Degeneres. The talk show host was named 'LGBT hero of 2008' and 'most lesbilicious lesbian/bisexual celebrity'. In addition, Ellen and Portia were crowned 'cutest celebrity couple'.

Hundreds of lesbian and bisexual women took part in the poll, which was conducted by lesbian news website Lesbilicious.co.uk.

The most lesbilicious straight celebrity after Pink is Juno star Ellen Page, say British lesbians. 20% of lesbians think that Ellen Page is too cute a tomboy to resist - and no doubt it helps that Page will be playing a lesbian police officer in a new movie being filmed later this year. Third most lesbilicious straight celeb is Sarah Palin impersonator and comedienne Tina Fey with 13% of votes, and then Kylie and Madonna come in joint fifth with 4% each. Katy Perry might have kissed a girl and liked it, but the feeling isn’t mutual – only 3% of lesbians think she’s lesbilicious.

When it comes to genuinely lesbian/bisexual celebs, Ellen Degeneres came out top with 24% of the vote, hotly followed by Angelina Jolie (20%) and Leisha Hailey with (19%). Leisha Hailey is the only openly gay woman to star in sexy lesbian series The L Word. After years of speculation about her sexuality, Jodie Foster's public acknowledgment of her female partner has shot up her popularity with lesbians, helping her to the fourth spot with 18% of the vote. Lindsay Lohan's openness about her lesbian relationship with DJ Sam Ronson has also boosted her popularity in the lesbian community, winning her 10% of votes. Coming in sixth with 8% was long-time favourite, openly bisexual Drew Barrymore.

Pink might be pretty lesbilicious, but there is a secretly gay celebrity even more likely to come out in 2009, according to British lesbians - Michelle Rodriguez, the sexy star of The Fast and the Furious and TV series Lost. 34% of lesbians say that Rodriguez sets off their gaydar, but Rodriguez has always denied the rumours about her sexuality - even when bisexual Terminator 3 actress Kristanna Loken hinted in 2007 that she and Rodriguez had had a relationship. After Michelle Rodriguez and Pink, 23% of lesbians believe that the lesbian rumours about hiphop star and Chicago actress Queen Latifah are true, and 9% believe that singer Ricky Martin might be the one to come clean about his sexuality this year.

The honour of being named the 'most lesbilicious lesbian/bisexual musician' went to Canadian singer-songwriters twins Tegan and Sara. The gorgeous, openly-lesbian musicians won 29% of votes, ahead of Leisha Hailey (23%) - who is not only an actress but half of music duo Uh Huh Her - and old-timer kd lang (14%). Bisexual folk star Ani DiFranco came in fourth with 13% of the vote, perhaps due in part to her recent marriage to a man. Beth Ditto and Tracy Chapman came in fifth and sixth, with 10% and 6% of the vote respectively.

Ellen Degeneres and wife Portia Di Rossi were named ‘cutest celebrity couple’ by nearly half (48%) of Lesbilicious.co.uk readers, but a third (35%) thought the title should go to Lindsay Lohan and Sam Ronson instead. Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt got 8% of the vote, ahead of Katie Price and Peter Andre (3%). David and Victoria Beckham received just 1% of the vote.

And it seems that not even lesbians are immune to the charms of President-elect of the USA Barack Obama – 40% of lesbians voted Obama ‘most Lesbilicious man’, ahead of hunks Jonny Depp (31%), Brad Pitt (9%), David Beckham (7%) or Orlando Bloom (4%).

In addition, 10% of lesbians voted Obama the LGBT hero of 2008, just behind Rachel Maddow (11%) and Ellen Degeneres (23%).

In contrast, 17% of lesbians thought that the ‘LGBT villain’ of 2008 was The Pope / the religious right. 16% thought it was Republican Vice-President candidate Sarah Palin, and George W Bush and anti-gay voters in California came in joint third with 10% each.

Lesbilicious.co.uk spokesperson Rosie Kirk comments:

"Ellen Degeneres is a legend. She was one of the first openly gay celebrities, and recently she's won hearts by using her talk show to raise awareness of gay issues. She truly deserves the title 'LGBT hero'.

“As for Pink - she's got the hair, the tattoos and most importantly the attitude – no wonder lesbians love her! Hopefully it’s only a matter of time before she realises how much more fun girls are and comes over to the dyke side."

Best. Lesbian. Movies. Ever. The Sequel. plus Name That Movie

Well ladies, you love your lesbian movies, and you sure didn't hesitate in telling me which ones I missed in my first round of the "Best. Lesbian. Movies. Ever."

See, the problem was, at that point, I was still catching myself up on the greatest lesbian flicks ever made. Sure, I have a day job and 5 pets to take care of, but what's really important here? Lesbian movies, that's what. Without the quintessential lesbian film to provoke us and inspire us, what's the point of living, really. I took your suggestions and am now releasing the "Best. Lesbian. Movies. Ever. The Sequel". You spoke and you were heard. Enjoy!

I Want More Sex... and the City - The Movie Sequel is Coming!

Are you a Sex and the City fan?

If you are, than girl, strap on your Monolo Blahniks and grab your Birkin bags again. Sex and the City" stylist Patricia Field has revealed that the rumored sequel to "Sex and the City: The Movie" will be hitting a theater near you ... eventually. And, by the way, this is all very unofficial. But who really cares about officiality? Heck, that's not even a word! All I know is that the sequel better be good and lord knows the writers have big shoes to fill.

"I do believe it will happen, because [creator] Michael Patrick King himself told me it's gonna happen," she told MTV News.

The original big-screen adaptation of the HBO series, released back in May, was an instant hit that updated fans on the glamorous lives of Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda.

If you missed the movie (and shame on you if you did) here's a recap:

    - Carrie got married to Mr. Big, but only after he practically left her at the altar, in only a way that Mr. Big could do.
    - Charlotte and Harry adopted a Chinese girl and although she was only 6 years old, she got to spend her time hanging out with four middle-aged women while they talked about sex and martinis.
    - Samantha moved to LA and hated it. Smith Jarred worked too much and so Samantha decided he wasn't spending enough attention on her so she dumped him.
    - Miranda got cheated on my Steve. She left him and couldn't find it in her heart to forgive him, until she was on the Brooklyn bridge and decided she could either forgive or jump off. She's still alive.

What will the next chapter in their lives bring? Here's my prediction:

Big and Carrie are still married. She makes him go to therapy to deal with his monogamy issues. They buy a brownstone in the Upper East Side and Carrie changes her column to "Married in the City (and Still Having Sex But Not Nearly As Often As She'd Like)". Charlotte gets pregnant by some miracle of God. It's a little boy but strangely, he is also Chinese like his sister. Charlotte swears she hasn't had an affair and proclaims the "Immaculate Asian Conception" They name him Yin and Charlotte starts a support group for Park Avenue Stay-At-Home Moms. Samantha moves back to NY and continues to do the PR thing. Smith Jerrod gives up his professional acting career to start a porn film company called "Full Moon Productions" and when Samantha gets wind of this, she immediately takes him back. The two of them decide to write, direct and star in the first movie which turns into a huge success. After taking Steve back despite his affair, Miranda comes to the realization that her attraction to him is platonic when she herself has a hot affair with her nanny, played by Bridget Moynahan (Big's ex). They move in together a week later and Miranda fully comes out of the closet and files an amicable divorce with Steve, who later turns out to be gay himself. They all live happily ever after in their blissful state (of New York).

Butchlalis de Panochtitlan Dissect Gender Identity in 1980s East L.A. Barber

What was it like for you when you first saw two women kissing? Do you stay in the place where you grew up even if being out is dangerous there? Can you move past discrimination, or will memories of it haunt you? And how much of your butchness is in your haircut?

The Butchlalis de Panochtitlan—Raquel Gutierrez, Mari Garcia, and Claudia Rodriguez--explore these questions and many more in their stage show The Barber of East L.A. I saw a staged reading of the show directed by the legendary Luis Alfaro last night at Cal-State L.A. as part of the larger Joto Caucus supported by the National Association for Chicana and Chicano Studies.

This witty trio produces consistently capitvating work, their most recent feat no exception. The performers use humor, personal homages, historical anchors, and their monumental moral compasses to challenge and skewer traditional notions of gender conformity. The Butchlalis are uniquely clever in their treatments of somber and complex subjects, rendering deeply thoughtful statements into a provokingly sensuous and unfailingly entertaining medium.

The show’s story revolves around Chonch (played by Gutierrez), a butch lesbian in 1980s East L.A. returning home from barbers’ school to the hostile climate she left behind. Chonch reconnects with the ghosts of her past, some expected and others a surprise, all the while processing loss, harassment, and her own stubborn perseverance. Another protagonist of the show, young Betty (played by Rodriguez), must confront her own identity as bicurious latina punk from a broken home in an area increasingly inhabited by skinheads and cock-rock. The two characters mediate between the extremes of return and escape, love and anger, past and future.

Other notable characters include Martinez the shithead male cop (played by the inimitable Garcia), Betty’s best friend young gay boy Julian (Gutierrez), recurring Butchlali superstar Juana Chingas (Rodriguez), and the ethereal Isabel (Garcia). The three Butchlalis are assisted by a plethora of wigs that also serve as scenery when not in use.

I learned of the Butchlalis at their last show, Dickwhipped!, for which I got tickets on a whim last April at the Highways Performance Space in Santa Monica and could not believe my good fortune. That show was composed of a series of vignettes, most notable in my mind a video about anal submission play and a sketch about the oldest living butch lesbian in East L.A. about to die. I had a friend with me, and we both were starstruck--and super-turned on. In full disclosure I admit I have major problems deciding which Butchlali is the hottest, even though my companion and I debated it for the rest of that evening, and even though I have given it much thought since then.

The Butchlalis will hold their next performance of The Barber of East L.A. November 22, 2008 at MacGowan Hall (MacGowan 1330) at UCLA as part of the Actions of Transfer: Women's Performance in the Americas event presented by The UCLA Center for Performance Studies. The video I am including below shows a staged reading--much like what I saw last night--but I understand the show next month at UCLA will be off-book. I urge you to join me in supporting these radically awesome butch artists; I can guarantee you will enjoy them.

Also, Butchlalis member Raquel Gutierrez performs tonight in her first solo performance piece at Highways Performance Space in Santa Monica. Click here for further information.

TV: Gayer than Ever According to GLAAD

Gay visibility. It's important to the LGBTQI community more than most people realize. Kids are coming out at younger ages every year and look for important role models within their community. This is often lacking at home or in their small-town, rural settings. Logically, the next place they might turn to is TV. It is important that the gay and lesbian community be represented in mainstream TV. It is important for the younger generation to see positive role models even if it is in a fictional light. As much as we don't want to believe it, we are a generation of television watchers; we celebrate TV, embrace the shows we love and follow them loyally.

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) have announced that the number of gay and lesbian TV characters on broadcast networks will double this season.

GLAAD’s yearly survey reveals that there will be 16 regular LGBT characters on major network scripted series in the 2008-2009 season. This is double the amount of LGBT characters in last year’s season, and the most recorded since GLAAD began carrying out the survey 13 years ago. The figures are welcomed as the survey demonstrated declining LGBTQI representation in television broadcasts in 2006-2007, and 2007-2008.

The survey also shows that the number of recurring LGBT characters is on the rise, increasing from 13 last season to this season’s 19. This means that LGBT characters will account for 2.6% of the scripted series population, increasing from 1.1% in 2007 and 1.3% in 2006.

According to PinkNews.co.uk, GLAAD president Neil Giuliano said:

"This dramatic increase shows how far many networks have come in developing complex, multilayered lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender characters."

The synonymously conservative FOX network (owned by Ruport Murdoch) was named as the most-improved network for LGBTQI representation. The network had no LGBT characters last year, but this year will have five, which is more than any other network. CBS has no LGBT characters, whilst CW has only one.

Fox attracted criticism from GLAAD in August, when Fox News host Gregg Jarrett and US Weekly editor-at-large Ian Drew discussed an America’s Next Top Model contestant who is transgender.

GLAAD claimed that Mr Jarrett mocked the contestant’s description of herself as a woman "whose cards were dealt differently" and took issue with Mr Drew's reference to the programm as "America's Next Top Tranny."

GLAAD also pointed out that throughout the discussion, Mr Jarrett switched between male and female pronouns when referring to the contestant which shows a high level of disregard for the issue at hand.

GLAAD contacted Fox News Channel and US Weekly immediately after the show, calling on both to apologize.

The following day Mr Jarrett apologised on air for his comments, saying:

"This time yesterday we aired a segment about a transgender by the name of Isis, who will compete in the upcoming season of the television show America’s Next Top Model.

"The group GLAAD, Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation sent us an email saying it was offensive.

"That was not our intention. We apologize."

Having such incredibly visibility for the upcoming year in TV is really important and we hope to be able to continue to make note and cover the LGBTQI characters on TV. Personally, I am quite excited that Olivia Wilde is playing the bisexual character #13 on HOUSE, MD (FOX) and look forward to seeing how that storyline develops.

Do you have a favorite LGBTQI character on TV? If so, who and why?

Itty Bitty Titty Committee DVD Release Party - Los Angeles

This past Tuesday I attended the Los Angeles Itty Bitty Titty Committee DVD release party put on by POWER UP in conjuction with FUSE EVENTS (the women behind the popular lesbian club night 'Truckstop' on "Gimme Sugar"). It was held at Eleven restaurant and bar in the heart of gayville, West Hollywood.

The ladies were out in full force for the release party to see all the special guests walk the red carpet and a lucky first 50 arrivals got a free Itty Bitty t-shirt. I was lucky enough to get up close and personal with the red-carpet arrivals which included appearances from Jenny Shimizu (IBTC, Firefox), Michelle Wolff (Mango Kiss, Dante's Cove), Melanie Mayron (IBTC, thirtysomething), Stacy Codikow (Power Up Founder) and more!

    IBTC plot summary
Anna is coming out. But not as gay as a revolutionary. Itty Bitty Titty Committee is a rockin love song to the heady rush of sex, freedom and rebellion that happens when an everyday girl discovers her own strength and the righteous indignation needed to take action and change the world. Anna is a shy, just-out-of-high-school lesbian, still living with her parents and working at a plastic surgery clinic. She is depressed because of a recent breakup but lives in a super-loving, gay-is-A-OK kind of family. Her world opens up one night when she catches a one-woman army reclaiming public space for women (i.e., spray painting the clinic where Anna works). A recruiting member of the guerrilla girls-esque Clits in Action (C(i)A), Sadie is trying to make people aware of how bad plastic surgery is for women. With an undeniable attraction to this sexy, raw rebel gurl, Anna eagerly joins the ranks of C(i)A and starts her rollercoaster ride from meek and mousy to bad-ass bravado. Full of mosh pits, power fists and utter charm.
