The LT Family: Meet Geraldine Joosten

My name is Geraldine Joosten. I am a lesbian, a writer, a comedian, a freelance journalist, a gay rights activist and drag king living in Holland. I am also Jewish.

That’s a lot, most people think. But I don’t stop there, I also sing, act and run a news site for British comedian David Walliams. At the moment my main focus is writing my new book, a sexy musical lesbian drama set in the 1920’s and my internet comedy show “The Mad Gerald Show”. A show about filthy rich dandy Lothario Doctor Gerald Damien M. Eshugener (played by moi ;-)) a debonair man about town. With his posh title and big bucks he managed to buy the title of Doctor, but it isn’t certain how much he really knows about psychiatry. He does know women though, and lots of them. Getting them on his couch to make them pour their gorgeous little hearts out seems to have a miraculous effect on his love life. What his wife Rachel thinks of all this is another question. Gerald is a snub, rude and thinks he knows everything. Does he really …? I write the scripts, act and edit the shows, so it’s a lot of work.

Still, I was desperate to write for Lesbiatopia. Why? Because I have a lot of opinions that I would love to share with you. A few years ago I wrote columns for Lavender News a new sort of Gay and Lesbian news site I had set up with like minded pals. We made quite a big splash at the start, but had to fold again less then a year after the launch due to lack of funding. This was really sad and knocked me for six for a while. Still the good thing is that I discovered that I loved writing columns and that I wanted to share my opinions with others. I hope to be able to do this here and am really looking forward to sharing with you all.

The Big Gay Sketch Show Presents: How The Mormon Stole Everything

LOGO's Big Gay Sketch Show just finished taping their 3rd Season and although it's not set to air until 2010, you can wet your big gay whistle here with this hilarious video in support of gay marriage and BGSS's response to the Mormons who funded Proposition 8 in California for their own selfish, religious right. And if you like Dr. Suess-style satires, you will definitely appreciate this.

Nicol Paone, At it Again

It's no secret that lesbians love Nicol Paone, one of our favorite funny ladies from the Big Gay Sketch Show. Nicol is always up to some kind of crazy shenanigans in LA, usually involving a video camera and a lot of humor. This week, she's posted her latest video on Funny or Die, and this time she's gone after her poor, innocent roommate Malin Ackerman (The Heartbreak Kid, The Watchmen) in what results in a hilarious "tour" that only Nicol could pull off.

OML In The Spotlight: Jackie and Layla

Everyone complains about the fact that there are very few lesbian characters and story lines on TV in the United States. While we agree with you, especially with the end of The L Word near, we decided to cast a wider net to find lesbian characters and story lines in television shows around the world.

At One More Lesbian we aggregate the world's lesbian film, television, and video content on one site. Through our search and all the submissions to the site , we've come to know a considerable amount of lesbian characters and story lines. Here's one example(with many more to come)...

Kick: Layla and Jackie

'Kick' (Australia) is a 13 part, fast and lively romantic comedy series following the lives of wild, crazy, twenty something Miki Mavros, and several families from all over the world, who live and work in Brunswick, Australia. Love, laughs, friendship, fighting, families and football. Love is the Game. University student Layla meets Jackie in a fencing match and the sparks begin to fly. You can watch Layla and Jackie's relationship unfold here.

***No official plans for a second season have been announced by SBS TV.

Lesbian TV: What's Hot Right Now

They don't call it "boob tube" for nothing, my friends. If you're like me, you love your TV and need your nightly fix. So, what are the lesbians watching these days? Well, I can't speak for all TV shows, but I can tell you what's on my DVR right now.

Nip/Tuck - This controversial show has been at the top of my list since it started six years ago. Nip/Tuck has not been shy in the lesbian department, with long-running character and Latina anesthesiologist Dr. Liz Cruz (Roma Mafia) as the "tokin' lesbian"... until last season when Portia De Rossi joined the cast as Olivia Lord, the sexy acupuncturist and more importantly, Julia's (Joely Richardson) love interest.

The good news is she's back this season although right now there's no indication of how many episodes Portia will be in for Season 6 (which aired January 6, 2009). I know my eyes will be glued to the tube at 10pm PST Tuesday nights in hopes of some more steamy lesbian sex scenes that Nip/Tuck is known for. Can I get a tissue?

House - Although it's been on hiatus since before the holidays, yet another favorite medical drama is HOUSE and I thank the good lord each episode for the gift that is Olivia Wilde, aka "Thirteen", aka Dr. Remy Hadley. Thirteen plays the smart, sexy and somewhat mysterious bisexual doctor on House's famous team. In a recent episode titled "Lucky 13", Dr. Hadley gets it on with a patient. A female patient. It was hot and awesome and made me want to dance around my living room. They recently foreshadowede that Thirteen may have a fling with Foreman, the African-American male doctor that is also on House's team. All I have to say to FOX's writers is, c'mon!! Does network television make all bisexual female characters go back to men in the end? The verdict's still out on that one, but you know I'll keep watching.

American Idol - You know you watch it, don't deny. It's Season 8 which equates to 8 glorious years of American Idol fanatacism. Who will come out on top this year? It's hard to say. Season 8 premiered last night and continues tonight at 8pm PST. Will the gays come out for auditions loud and proud? Will the lesbians make their fabulous voices heard? Will FOX once again cut away from anyone that seems remotely homosexual and continue to focus on blonde bimbos, rednecks and teen heart throbs? Only time will tell.

Top Chef - Mmmm do I love me some food and a good cooking show. This season, Season 5, there's only one out lesbian but she's pretty kickass and can make a mean soup like no other. Jamie, age 30 all tattooed and pretty, is also pretty rad. She's confident, outgoing, talented and
works as the Executive Chef at Absinthe, one of the busiest restaurants in San Francisco, to boot. You know I'll be rooting for this homegirl every Wednesday night at 10pm PST on BRAVO.

The L Word - This lesbocentric soap is a no brainer. Dykes, dykes and more dykes. So far we've experienced five glorious seasons of hot sex, lesbian drama, hot sex, uhauls galore, hot sex, nudity, hot sex and enough controversy to make George Bush look like a saint. The sad news is that the final season is only 8 episodes long. What gives, Showtime?! The final season (tear) premiers on January 18, 2009. I think there is still one question that remains in all our minds... what will happen to lesbian life after the L Word?

30 Rock - Ok, I know there's no lesbians on this show, but there's Tina Fey and although she's not actually a lesbian, a girl can dream right? The next episode, set to air tomorrow night at 9:30pm PST will be rockin' the sexy latino Salma Hayek as a nurse who soon gets hit on by big CEO man Jack McCallister (Alec Baldwin). But we all know the lesbos only watch the show for one reason. Tina Fey. Bow down to the media Goddess!

What's on your weekly TV line-up?

Prop 8 (The Musical)

The hilarious people at "Funny of Die" have put out a new video, "Prop 8 - The Musical." The star-studded participants include Jack Black, Neil Patrick Harris, Margaret Cho, John C. Reilly, Maya Rudolph and many more familiar faces. If this isn't comedy, I don't know what is.

Butchlalis de Panochtitlan Dissect Gender Identity in 1980s East L.A. Barber

What was it like for you when you first saw two women kissing? Do you stay in the place where you grew up even if being out is dangerous there? Can you move past discrimination, or will memories of it haunt you? And how much of your butchness is in your haircut?

The Butchlalis de Panochtitlan—Raquel Gutierrez, Mari Garcia, and Claudia Rodriguez--explore these questions and many more in their stage show The Barber of East L.A. I saw a staged reading of the show directed by the legendary Luis Alfaro last night at Cal-State L.A. as part of the larger Joto Caucus supported by the National Association for Chicana and Chicano Studies.

This witty trio produces consistently capitvating work, their most recent feat no exception. The performers use humor, personal homages, historical anchors, and their monumental moral compasses to challenge and skewer traditional notions of gender conformity. The Butchlalis are uniquely clever in their treatments of somber and complex subjects, rendering deeply thoughtful statements into a provokingly sensuous and unfailingly entertaining medium.

The show’s story revolves around Chonch (played by Gutierrez), a butch lesbian in 1980s East L.A. returning home from barbers’ school to the hostile climate she left behind. Chonch reconnects with the ghosts of her past, some expected and others a surprise, all the while processing loss, harassment, and her own stubborn perseverance. Another protagonist of the show, young Betty (played by Rodriguez), must confront her own identity as bicurious latina punk from a broken home in an area increasingly inhabited by skinheads and cock-rock. The two characters mediate between the extremes of return and escape, love and anger, past and future.

Other notable characters include Martinez the shithead male cop (played by the inimitable Garcia), Betty’s best friend young gay boy Julian (Gutierrez), recurring Butchlali superstar Juana Chingas (Rodriguez), and the ethereal Isabel (Garcia). The three Butchlalis are assisted by a plethora of wigs that also serve as scenery when not in use.

I learned of the Butchlalis at their last show, Dickwhipped!, for which I got tickets on a whim last April at the Highways Performance Space in Santa Monica and could not believe my good fortune. That show was composed of a series of vignettes, most notable in my mind a video about anal submission play and a sketch about the oldest living butch lesbian in East L.A. about to die. I had a friend with me, and we both were starstruck--and super-turned on. In full disclosure I admit I have major problems deciding which Butchlali is the hottest, even though my companion and I debated it for the rest of that evening, and even though I have given it much thought since then.

The Butchlalis will hold their next performance of The Barber of East L.A. November 22, 2008 at MacGowan Hall (MacGowan 1330) at UCLA as part of the Actions of Transfer: Women's Performance in the Americas event presented by The UCLA Center for Performance Studies. The video I am including below shows a staged reading--much like what I saw last night--but I understand the show next month at UCLA will be off-book. I urge you to join me in supporting these radically awesome butch artists; I can guarantee you will enjoy them.

Also, Butchlalis member Raquel Gutierrez performs tonight in her first solo performance piece at Highways Performance Space in Santa Monica. Click here for further information.

Tina Fey as Sarah Palin: An Interview with "Katie Couric"

Here's a little more humor for your Sunday. If you happened to miss SNL last night, you missed a wickedly good time. First of all, the hilarious Anna Faris was hosting, and second of all, Tina Fey was back for the second week in a row doing her killer Sarah Palin impression with the awesome Amy Poehler by her side, yet again. This week, Amy Poehler plays Katie Couric interviewing Sarah Palin. This is based off the exclusive one-on-one interview from September 24th on CBS that left Sarah Palin with her tongue tied. Both Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are spot on in their impersonations, as always, and here's hoping that there is even more to come next week.

Here's the SNL clip from last night's Saturday Night Live

Here's a clip from the original Sarah Palin-Katie Couric interview

Exclusive! An Interview with BGSS's Nicol Paone: Part 1 of 5

Not too long ago, We were invited to spend an evening with Nicol Paone at her beautiful Hollywood Hills home (not in that way... get your mind out of the gutter) for an exclusive interview.

If you aren't familiar with Nicol Paone, she is the hilarious "straight (but not narrow)" addition to LOGO's Big Gay Sketch Show. And if you have caught the Big Gay Sketch Show, then you have probably seen her imitate such characters as Elaine Stritch, Alice Cramden and Joe from "Facts of Life".

Nicol is probably one of the nicest, funniest, smartest women in the business and I was honored to be able to join her at her home for a great interview.

Nicol covered so many topics with us... We quickly realized that clearly, one day just wasn't going to be enough, so we made this into a five part video interview; which means YOU get 5 days of Nicol Paone.

Today, we are happy to present Part 1... As Nicol Paone talks about Growing up around comedy.

Stay tuned for Part 2...

Breaking News! Big Gay Sketch Show Renewed for a 3rd Season

A source has just confirmed to Lesbiatopia that the Big Gay Sketch Show will be renewed for a third season!!

The Big Gay Sketch Show is an LGBT-themed sketch comedy program that first debuted on Logo on April 24, 2007.

The series is produced by Rosie O'Donnell and directed by Amanda Bearse. The program was originally titled "The Big Gay Show" but was renamed during production.

As the name indicates, the show features comedy sketches with gay themes or a gay twist. Sketch topics include parodies of old sitcoms like The Honeymooners and The Facts of Life under the Nick at Nite-parodying heading "Logo at Nite," a lesbian speed dating session and an extended send-up of Broadway legend Elaine Stritch working as a Wal-Mart greeter, among other decidedly un-glamorous jobs.

"The Big Gay Show" stars Dion Flynn, Stephen Guarino, Nicol Paone, Julie Goldman, Kate McKinnon, Erica Ash, Michael Serrato, and Jonny McGovern.

Details as to air dates are still up in the air but stay tuned, Lesbiatopia will fill you in all the details as soon as we know!
