Butchlalis de Panochtitlan Dissect Gender Identity in 1980s East L.A. Barber

What was it like for you when you first saw two women kissing? Do you stay in the place where you grew up even if being out is dangerous there? Can you move past discrimination, or will memories of it haunt you? And how much of your butchness is in your haircut?

The Butchlalis de Panochtitlan—Raquel Gutierrez, Mari Garcia, and Claudia Rodriguez--explore these questions and many more in their stage show The Barber of East L.A. I saw a staged reading of the show directed by the legendary Luis Alfaro last night at Cal-State L.A. as part of the larger Joto Caucus supported by the National Association for Chicana and Chicano Studies.

This witty trio produces consistently capitvating work, their most recent feat no exception. The performers use humor, personal homages, historical anchors, and their monumental moral compasses to challenge and skewer traditional notions of gender conformity. The Butchlalis are uniquely clever in their treatments of somber and complex subjects, rendering deeply thoughtful statements into a provokingly sensuous and unfailingly entertaining medium.

The show’s story revolves around Chonch (played by Gutierrez), a butch lesbian in 1980s East L.A. returning home from barbers’ school to the hostile climate she left behind. Chonch reconnects with the ghosts of her past, some expected and others a surprise, all the while processing loss, harassment, and her own stubborn perseverance. Another protagonist of the show, young Betty (played by Rodriguez), must confront her own identity as bicurious latina punk from a broken home in an area increasingly inhabited by skinheads and cock-rock. The two characters mediate between the extremes of return and escape, love and anger, past and future.

Other notable characters include Martinez the shithead male cop (played by the inimitable Garcia), Betty’s best friend young gay boy Julian (Gutierrez), recurring Butchlali superstar Juana Chingas (Rodriguez), and the ethereal Isabel (Garcia). The three Butchlalis are assisted by a plethora of wigs that also serve as scenery when not in use.

I learned of the Butchlalis at their last show, Dickwhipped!, for which I got tickets on a whim last April at the Highways Performance Space in Santa Monica and could not believe my good fortune. That show was composed of a series of vignettes, most notable in my mind a video about anal submission play and a sketch about the oldest living butch lesbian in East L.A. about to die. I had a friend with me, and we both were starstruck--and super-turned on. In full disclosure I admit I have major problems deciding which Butchlali is the hottest, even though my companion and I debated it for the rest of that evening, and even though I have given it much thought since then.

The Butchlalis will hold their next performance of The Barber of East L.A. November 22, 2008 at MacGowan Hall (MacGowan 1330) at UCLA as part of the Actions of Transfer: Women's Performance in the Americas event presented by The UCLA Center for Performance Studies. The video I am including below shows a staged reading--much like what I saw last night--but I understand the show next month at UCLA will be off-book. I urge you to join me in supporting these radically awesome butch artists; I can guarantee you will enjoy them.

Also, Butchlalis member Raquel Gutierrez performs tonight in her first solo performance piece at Highways Performance Space in Santa Monica. Click here for further information.

Congrats to Rachel Maddow; Knock 'em Dead Tonight!

We at Lesbiatopia extend our heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Rachel Maddow on the debut of her show tonight on MSNBC at 9pmET/6pmPT. Not only is Dr. Maddow the first lesbian to get her own TV news show—-in primetime, no less!-—she also is one of the most thoughtful and well informed pundits out there, gay or straight (which makes all of us lezzies proud).

Three cheers for Dr. Maddow, and for MSNBC for recognizing and promoting Dr. Maddow's enormous brain five nights a week. You hear that, LOGO? That's five nights a week of brilliant lesbian deliciousness--more thinking in tonight's first episode than Gimme Sugar featured in its whole first season! Thank you, MSNBC, for beaming a lesbian role model into homes nationwide when "our" own network wouldn't even give us one.

So gear up your TiVos, dear Lesbiatopia readers, and get ready for The Rachel Maddow Show. You'll be able to say you watched it from the beginning--before it became the enormously popular smash it's destined to be.

Remember also to catch Dr. Maddow's radio show weeknights on AirAmerica.

Lesbian Television in Europe: I'd Do Anything

Granted, in Europe we don't have mega dyke festivities like the The Dinah Shore Weekend or even Olivia cruises but I can tell you that - as a lesbian - nothing beats watching BBC TV Shows on a Saturday night.

A few weeks ago The Lordest of Lords (Andrew Lloyd Webber) and The Gayest Of Gays (Graham Norton) started a new televised quest for a West End leading lady, this time for the part of Nancy in the musical Oliver. And I have to say that I was quite amazed by the hotness of the contestants this time round. As always there are a few generic blondes that need to be voted off first; although things are not really going according to plan because last Saturday the delicious Cleo got sent home (see picture below). Oh well, there's still plenty of other lusciousness to go around:

Rachel

Rachel, who reminds me of Roisin Connor from Season 4 of Bad Girls and that can only be a good thing.

Niamh

Niamh, who is so hot it almost hurts my eyes.

Keisha

Keisha, who will probably go home next week so let's enjoy her while it lasts

Jodie

Jodie, who is hot because she is so unlike all the other contestants.

Cleo

Dearly Departed Cleo, who deserved to stay in the competition but as (TV) history has proven: letting viewers vote has never been a good idea, only a lucrative one.

Samantha

Samantha... in hot pants... no further comment...

Rachel Maddow Is the Super-Hotness, Talks About Bush [video]

The only thing wrong with her is that the Bush she talks about is the bad kind--the kind in the White House. Regardless, you have to see the clips of her guest-hosting Countdown with Keith Olbermann on MSNBC last Friday. Countdown is a news show with a strongly political bent, and Rachel burnt up the place with her sizzling brilliant out self. The woman has a radio show, too, but kind of a waste when she's this smokin'. Must-see links below.

Photo: Paul Teeling

Not that you need more to make you crazy about this woman, but according to her website:

Rachel has a doctorate in political science (she was a Rhodes Scholar) and a background in HIV/AIDS activism, prison reform, and other lefty rabblerousing. She shakes a mean cocktail."

Yeah, baby! Rachel is a correspondent for MSNBC and appears regularly on Countdown (which plays on MSNBC Monday-Friday twice daily); the rest of the show rocks, too.

Go out and TiVo her some love.

Clip 1:
Rachel reports on NYT poll: 81% believe the country is off track (with Jonathan Alter)

Clip 2:
Rachel reports on the Bush administration's refusal to release the new National Intelligence Estimate on Iraq

Clip 3:
Rachel reports on the day's top three Bush scandals (the daily "Bushed" segment)

Clip 4:
Rachel reports on candidate "likeability"

Pin-Up Of The Week: Jill Bennett

My Lover C. contaminated me with Jill Bennett adoration. At Casa Dykes it's hard to get away from Jill Bennett these days so I figured it was better to join My Lover C.'s crush than to try and fight it. (We almost decided to make a fan website this weekend but then our age dawned on us again and we felt a little bit ashamed.) Amongst other things Jill Bennett stars in 3Way and she's one of the terrible three in AfterEllen's We're Getting Nowhere vlog. She also acted in quite a few films and over the weekend we watched In Her Line Of Fire.

When we had been watching for about 15 minutes I said to My Lover C.: I wish we had already finished watching it because it's such an awful movie. But My Lover C. was relentless and she told me that if I wanted to indulge in some Jill Bennett - a desire I had previously stated - I should shut up, watch the movie and focus on Jill Bennett's dirty red t-shirt. So I watched the entire movie but not without feeling like I wasted 2 hours of my life just because I'm a lesbian and I have some insane desire to watch other lesbians on TV, no matter how bad the movie is.

But that wasn't the worst of it. Because Jill Bennett now also stars in Dante's Cove we felt like we had to give that series a try as well. And even though My Lover C. had warned me that the number of naked chests on that show (she did some research) is very high I was not prepared for what I saw. I think we watched it for about half an hour and in those 30 minutes we saw 4 (four) gay (male) shag scenes, and it wasn't just some kissing, let me tell you that. I think it comes very close to soft porn (I'll need to ask My Lover C. to some research on that as well) and it is of course also totally over the top (the tag line 'Posessed & Undressed' says it all, really). When I went to bed a little later I was amazed at the things we put ourselves through because of cute dykes. Because Jill Bennett is cute, there's no denying that. I just wish she would play some other, more watchable parts. Please Jill, do it for the dykes.

Jill Bennett

the new girl

An excerpt from an e-mail I sent to Lesberita:
secret

"I am TOTALLY developing a small crush on our newest employee. She's like an assistant to my immediate boss, so she deals with us mostly now, as opposed to him. Does that make her my boss? No, no, it isn't that type of position...I don't think

Well, maybe not a crush, but it's like some sort of, oh,your all sorts of innocent and hot with your I'm from the mid-west and married and very heterosexual and perhaps bored thing you've got going.

She laughs at all my dumb jokes and is always touching me. Ha Ha it's funny.

I knnda want to take her into the closet and bang the hell out of her.

She's straight, she's married, she's my co-worker...not going to happen. Plus, we don't really have a closet here, persay...

Aheh.

Pour Some SUGAR on Me...PLEASE

Um.

I'm still speechless.

Really and truly.

I can hardly hear myself think...what with my heart still beating so hard in my chest.

Move over Mariska Hargitay, heeeeeeeeeere comes Jennifer Nettles!!!!

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

She is taking your numero uno spot on my celebrity crush list.

I've always had an itty bitty crush on Jennifer, the lead singer of the country band Sugarland.

It turned into full blown I HAVE TO HAVE YOU OR I'LL DIE syndrome last night.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

We attended their concert in Charlottesville and I think my tongue is still somewhere draped over the chair that was two rows down from me.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

My thoughts, as they occurred to me:

1) ubbuda, ubbuda, ubbuda...WOWSERS! She's hotter in person than she is on TV!

2) I should let April know I have to immediately add Jennifer to my "freebie" list. Tonight could be the night and it would be wrong to spring it on her without fair warning.

3) The teeny-bopper with the waist-belt in front of me is probably getting really irritated that I keep slobbering all over her head. I can't help it. I bet I look like a Saint Bernard.

4) I've NEVER EVER been to a concert where the performer looks like she's having THAT much fun.

5) It's clearly because she knows I'm here.

6) Ooh! Did she just look at me? I think she did!

7) I'm breathing the same air as Jennifer Nettles! I'm breathing the same air as Jennifer Nettles!

8) Wonder where her bus is?

9) I wonder what another restraining order would mean?

10) NO! NO! This can't be your last song! NO! NO!

11) I feel empty. Sad. The show is over. Separation anxiety is consuming me. Forlorn.

12) I know! I'll start sending her love notes and pictures of myself right away.

13) There...that feels better. I like being proactive.

Thank goodness I have such an understanding girlfriend.

She let me gush about Jennifer ALL the way home.

For the full hour and a half.

She didn't seem overly excited about the Jennifer Nettles tattoo I'm planning for my entire back, but I feel confident she'll grow to love it.

Love her.

As I have.

I leave you with this.

Prepare yourselves:

A po-em!

A-hem!

Once again my tale rings true,
And I am an ingrate all over you.

My sweetness derived in love and desire,
Compliments, flirtations, sheer admire....

Turned your heart indeed, a connection,
but fast into that other direction.

Right to the place I have always ended.
Privileged in a way I never intended.

And thus, I hear your every thought.
Whether I want to...or not.

Pieces falling fast, and you just don't see,
Feeling for someone, but it isn't me.

And I die a little, whenever you speak,
Closer we get, the more I am weak.

You trust me, thanks, but I want a real chance.
To get out of friendship, and into your pants!

Wilde about Olivia

If you remember back to Season 2 of The OC, which was pretty much the only season I ever watched, there was a small plot twist that featured Mischa Barton's character developing a crush and even entering into a relationship with another girl. This hot blonde rocker chick (who I had never seen before) was pretty much the only reason why I watched The OC in the first place and let me tell ya, she was the hottest thing I'd seen on TV in a while. Now, normally I don't go ga-ga over girls on the big screen. To me, a girl's brains are usually the sexiest, but there was something about this new girl that made me feel like a 13-year-old at a Good Charlotte concert. I found out her name was Olivia Wilde and I had never seen her before. Who was she? Where did she come from? Was she going to be the hot new face in Hollywood? I had to know!

Unfortunately, The OC got lame as most of those types of shows do, and Olivia was written out of the script when Mischa Barton's character decided to go back to guys. Apparently, Hollywood thinks that being a Lesbian is conditional and with such lameness moving forward, I stopped watching the show... for good.

Fast forward to several years later (circa now), and I started to wonder... whatever happened to that hot lesbian that was on The OC?? I hadn't seen her in anything else and was saddened to think that maybe the show was her one-time debut in Hollywood.

And then...

I was recently watching the new season of HOUSE because that show rocks my socks off. I noticed one of the new doctors vying for a spot on House's team was an incredibly sexy brunette who looked oddly familiar...

I hopped on the computer and Googled the guest stars for the new season and sure enough there was my dream boat...Olivia Wilde. And this time around, she's playing a super smart, super sexy doctor whose on top of her game and doesn't put up with Dr. House's BS either. I was loving every minute of it. She's known on the show only as #13, penned by House himself, as a reference to her position in the group of 30 original doctors applying for a spot on House's new team. Now, as the season has progressed, #13 is one of four left (after last night's episode) in the race to make House's top 3 spots.

As I layed down my head to rest at 10pm PST last night, I prayed to whatever God existed to please let Olivia Wilde make it onto House's new team so that her wit, intelligence and beauty will grace the shows presence for many an episode to come. A girl doesn't ask for much, really, but seriously, this would make the show super top notch in my eyes.

Here is a clip from House, featuring #13 and a patient who has the incredible ability to mirror the true personality of the person in the room with him. House brings #13 in so he can catch a glimpse of who #13 really is, but unfortunately, it backfires on him quite a bit in a rather humorous way. Enjoy!

And now I just have one more question for all my Olivia Wilde fans:
do you like her better as a blonde or a brunette??

Jessica Biel Has a Hot Ass

I love Jessica Biel, in fact, if she were a lesbian and got down on one knee to propose, I'd have to say yes. So it just so happens that I was at the packers game last week and ran into Jessica. Of course, Justin was in tow but she seemed about as interested in him as a vegetarian at a Texas steak house. As we watched the game, we did a little flirting and I even grabbed her ass during a time out.

As Jessica seemed to enjoy it, I had the sneaking suspicion that Justin was on to our flirtations

But than I wasn't worried anymore because Jessica gave me the cutest look ever and I knew she really enjoyed it. Oh Jessica, I do love your hot, hot ass.

Weekly Dose of Sandra Bullock

Because I love her so much, I've decided to incorporate a weekly dose of Sandra Bullock on Lesbiatopia. If there was ever a Lesbian movie to come out where Sandra Bullock played the lead role, I think I would drop dead from a coronary right then and there. I mean, first of all, Sandra Bullock is the most beautiful creature on earth, and just to imagine her with another woman makes my blood feel like Old Faithful. I don't even know if she's a big hit with the lesbian community like some other actresses (Angelina Jolie, Pink, etc) but she would make one sexy dyke! I would tell you about the time that her and I were hanging out and I gave her a big wet one, but I'll let you see for yourself.

Here she is on the Ellen Show a few weeks ago talking about her new movie Premonition (which I have not seen yet, I know, I'm a bad fan).

Hope you enjoy your Weekly Dose of Sandra Bullock!

Loving Annabelle: Good Film or Clit Tease?

For anyone that hasn't seen it, here's the tag line: "The controversial story of a highly accomplished Catholic school teacher, who falls in love with her student, Annabelle." Hot right? Well, yes, actually the whole concept is very hot and I'm sure many of you have done the whole "catholic school girl/catholic teacher" role play game (I'll be the first one to admit it). When I heard about the movie "Loving Annabelle" I was ecstatic, especially for the lesbian community, and admittedly got a little moist in the panties when I read about the plot line. I waited with baited breath for it to come out on DVD and obviously had it on my Netflix list for several weeks before the DVD was released. I wanted to see it, and I wanted to see it now!
When the movie arrived, I popped it into the DVD player and snuggled up to Lesberada for some hot lesbian movie action.

Overall, the movie was very enjoyable to watch; Diane Gaidry (Simone) and Erin Kelly (Annabelle) were both excellent choices for the roles they played, and the two women weren't too bad on the eyes either. I really appreciated the cinematography and learned that the movie was inspired by the 1931 German classic, MAEDCHEN IN UNIFORM, which is pretty awesome. From the getco, I thought Annabelle was smokin' hot and couldn't really understand her attraction to Simone who was, to put nicely, kind of boring with her rural catholic lifestyle. Annabelle though, god bless her, played amazingly into the whole good-girl-gone-bad Catholic school girl, enough to make me want to go back to Catholic school and get me a piece of that education.

After the movie started to heat up a bit, I retracted my initial distaste for Simone and she began to grow on me. One thing I have to applaud is the directors outstanding ability to create an uncomfortable amount of sexual tension between the two women. I'm talking more sexual tension than there is between me and Sandra Bullock. It got to the point where I was starting to sweat and feel a little funny and wanted to jump up from the couch and yell "JUST FUCK, ALREADY!". The two women had a great on-screen chemistry, which obviously attributes to the success of the movie, but there's only so long you can watch two people interact in a platonic manner when it is obvious that they want to rip each other's clothes off (and you want to rip your clit off).

In essence, the movie was very good with a strong plot and talented actresses, but I feel as though the directors dragged the sexual tension a bit too far making it almost (but not quite) a glorified clit tease. I was overly thrilled with the ending (which I won't give away here), but will say that too many lesbian movies end with me needed a double dose of anti-depressants. As cheesy and cliche it might sound, I'm all for the happily ever after movies, so Loving Annabelle left me with a dry taste in my mouth and me wanting more. Will there be a sequel? Let's hope so. I'm thinking next time there should be a little less talk and a little more action. I say Fucking Annabelle: When Catholic School Girls Graduate. Who's with me???

See the trailer, buy the DVD!!

When I realized I was a Lesbian

This movie pretty much catapulted me out of the closet. Sandra Bullock is a goddess!!

This scene would be a defining moment in my lesbianism. I felt things "down there" that I never felt before.

Sandra Bullock, if you're reading this, I just want to say THANK YOU for being so damn hot!
